Stage Training System

THE PROBLEM

Many trainers turn away clients with disabilities because they don’t know where to start.

Most trainers learn one way to coach. Then a client arrives who uses a wheelchair, lives with MS, or has had a stroke, and the usual exercise selection, setup and progressions no longer fit. Guessing is risky. Saying no leaves the client without support.

This course gives you a third option: find out what the individual needs, make an appropriate change, and check whether it worked. It builds on what you already know about program design, strength and aerobic training, and screening. It does not ask you to diagnose or treat anyone.

THE METHOD

The Eight-Stage Adaptive Exercise System

Every condition chapter uses the same stages, so you are never starting from scratch with a new client.

STAGE 1

Screen

Can the client take part in the planned activity?

STAGE 2

Assess

What is the starting point?

STAGE 3

Design

What should the program include?

STAGE 4

Train

How will the session be delivered?

STAGE 5

Monitor

What happened during and after exercise?

STAGE 6

Adapt

What needs to change?

STAGE 7

Evaluate

Is the approach working?

STAGE 8

Progress

What demand should come next?

SAFETY BUILT IN

A response you can use in any session

The Green, Yellow, Red Safety System in Chapter 3 applies to every client and every condition. Each condition chapter adds its own precautions on top.

GREEN

Proceed as planned, and keep watching the client's response.

YELLOW

Pause, change the activity, and recheck before continuing. Get follow-up when needed.

RED

Stop. Follow the emergency response and call for help when the situation requires it.

Safety, consent, communication and referral run through all 38 chapters. You learn when to modify an exercise, when to ask a provider, and when to call for help.

who is this for

Certified trainers who want to say yes more often, and safely

The course is written for certified personal trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, and other qualified exercise professionals who already understand basic anatomy, exercise physiology, screening, technique and program design.

It focuses on adults. It stays inside fitness practice: you select and teach exercise, adapt instruction and equipment, monitor responses and evaluate progress. When a decision depends on clinical information you do not have, you will know how to ask for it.

Jason Keigher is a personal trainer and strength and conditioning specialist with more than 25 years of experience. His career has included work at Equinox Fitness Clubs and Reebok Sports Club/NY, as well as instruction in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation exercise at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, California.

Jason holds credentials from the American College of Sports Medicine as an Inclusive Fitness Specialist; the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist; the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and Performance Enhancement Specialist; and the American Council on Exercise as a Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor.

Based in the Palm Springs area, Jason develops fitness courses that connect exercise knowledge with practical training decisions. The Adaptive Exercise Specialist course reflects that approach: understand the client’s needs, select appropriate exercises, and use the response to guide the next decision.
